Firefox 3
Best browser overall
pros
* Fast
* Very customizable
* Uses fewer system resources than most
cons
* So many options can be confusing
* Crash on one tab crashes all
* Private browsing requires add-in
* Many other features require add-ins
Firefox remains the top-ranked web browser for Windows, Mac OSX and Linux users. It's by far the most-customizable web browser, with thousands of add-ins available. Reviews say Firefox 3 and the even-faster 3.1 beta are the best, using less memory than Firefox 2 and incorporating other improvements as well. Both Firefox 3 and 3.1 rival the new Google Chrome for speed, are much faster and use fewer system resources than Internet Explorer 8.
We found the best comparison reviews of the latest version of Firefox (3.1 beta) at TechRadar.com and PC World magazine, both of which compare it with Google Chrome and Internet Explorer 8. Softpedia.com reviews and rates all three browsers, plus Flock 2 and Opera 9.6 in separate reviews. PC Magazine, CNet.com and The Wall Street Journal provide excellent comparison tests of Firefox 3, the next-to-latest version. Tests at Gadgets-Reviews.com are less helpful because the reviewer doesn't clarify which version of Firefox is covered.
Flock 2 (beta)
Enhanced Firefox browser
pros
* All the advantages of Firefox 3
* Includes blog editor
* Integrates social networking
* Integrates photo sites
cons
* Extra features take up screen space
* Extras can be distracting
Reviews recommend Flock 2 for people who "live on the Web" because it has all the speed, security and options of Firefox 3 but builds in a blog editor, photo-uploader and big sidebar to keep current with social networking friends and RSS feeds. A horizontal photo bar shows thumbnails from photo-sharing sites. For those who love multitasking, this is a great browser choice, but for Windows users who just want fast, simple browsing, reviews recommend the minimalist Google Chrome.
We found the best comparison tests and ratings of Flock 2 at PC Magazine. Excellent single-product reviews at The Wall Street Journal and ArsTechnica.com make its advantages and drawbacks even clearer. The review at Cnet.com (Australia), which is shorter, compares Flock 2 with major browsers. Softpedia provides user ratings for Flock 2, while the editor's review covers a much earlier version.
Google Chrome (beta)
Fast browsing and search
pros
* Fast and simple
* Stable
* Private browsing option
* Enables offline use of Internet apps
cons
* No ad blocking
* Minimal options
* Skimpy bookmarking
* Uses a lot of system resources
The Google Chrome browser takes a minimalist approach, stripping down to basic browsing with an ultra-simple, intuitive interface. Reviewers find it very fast, with superb search features, private browsing and the best crash protection available. It also makes it possible to use Google desktop applications offline, and users can search the text of pages in the browser's history. The main drawbacks are fairly primitive bookmarking plus the lack of customization. For those who want RSS feeds and many other options within the browser, reviews recommend Firefox 3 (free), saying it's just as fast but much more customizable.
We found the best review of Google Chrome at TechRadar.com, where it's tested both on a new computer and an older one, and is compared with the latest beta versions of Firefox and Internet Explorer. The Wall Street Journal's Walter Mossberg compares Chrome with Internet Explorer 8 and Firefox 3 in a succinct review that clarifies each browser's pros and cons. The ratings and reviews at PC World magazine, Gadgets-Reviews.com, CNet.com and Softpedia.com add useful details. PC Magazine compares Chrome with Flock 2 and Opera 9.5 as well as with Firefox and Internet Explorer, but it seems prejudiced against Chrome mainly because it's new.
Opera 9.5
Best for older computers
pros
* Doesn't bog down older computers
* Excellent history of searching
* Synchronizes across computers
cons
* No ad blocking
* Not the fastest
* No private browsing
Reviews and tests recommend Opera as fast and lean, especially for older or underpowered computers apt to bog down on the resource-hungry Firefox, Chrome or IE7 and IE8 browsers. Despite its small size, Opera beats the other browsers in compliance with web standards, and it builds in loads of convenient features. Opera runs on more operating systems than most browsers, and it excels in synchronization. Reviews also praise its mobile version. If you have a fairly new, powerful computer, however, Firefox 3 is faster and gets top ranking in nearly all comparison reviews.
Opera isn't reviewed as often as more popular browsers, but we found excellent tests of Opera 9.5 at TechRadar.com, PC Magazine and Cnet.com (Australia), where it's compared with other major browsers. Softpedia reviews the beta version of Opera 9.6, but comparison tests at Gadgets-Reviews.com don't specify the browser versions used. An older review at ExtremeTech.com compares Opera with Safari for Windows.
Internet Explorer 8
Best IE revision
pros
* Excellent tab features
* Minimizes crash problems
* Privacy option
* Good security
cons
* Slow installation and operation
* Uses a lot of CPU and memory
For those who like using Internet Explorer, reviews recommend upgrading to Internet Explorer 8 as long as the computer is fairly new and powerful. Tests find that IE8 is slower than Firefox, Chrome and Opera, and that it uses more system resources. However, this latest version of Internet Explorer comes with excellent features built in, with significant improvements over IE7 – including private browsing, context-sensitive right click, color-coded tabs (with related tabs moved together) and improved security and search features. Each tab operates separately so if a site crashes, only that tab closes. Firefox 3 lacks this feature but can restore tabs after a crash.
We found the best reviews of Internet Explorer 8 at TechRadar.com, PC World magazine and Softpedia.com – all of which cover the beta 2 version and compare it with Google Chrome plus the latest version of Firefox 3.1 beta. Softpedia.com also compares Internet Explorer 8 with the latest version of Opera 9.6 beta. The Wall Street Journal's Walter Mossberg reviews IE8 in comparison with Firefox 3 and Chrome. But the reviews at PC Magazine and CNet.com are partly outdated because they cover the first beta version, not the second.
